ED02112 - Eduard
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4 is widely considered by historians and pilots as the pinnacle of the Bf 109 "Friedrich" series. Introduced in early 1942, it combined a cleaner aerodynamic design with a potent DB 601 E engine, making it a dominant World War II fighter before heavier models like the G-series took over.
The engine was powered by the Daimler-Benz DB 601 E inverted-V12 engine, delivering significant power boosts over earlier variants. It could reach a top speed of up to 691 km/h (approx. 430 mph) at altitude. the improved aerodynamics featured rounded wingtips, a streamlined nose contour, and a refined supercharger intake.
The armaments included a single 20 mm MG 151/20 motor cannon firing through the propeller hub with 200 rounds. Two cowl-mounted 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns with 1,000 rounds each and could also carry underwing 15 mm cannon pods or various bombs (such as SC50 or SC250).
The primary difference between the Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-4 and the Bf 109 G-2 ("Gustav") and Bf 109 G-4 is the engine upgrade from the Daimler Benz DB601 to the more powerful DB 605 engine, which shifted the aircraft's focus toward raw power and high-altitude performance at the expense of some manoeuvrability and handling.
