The Junkers Ju 88 A-4 was the most widely produced and important variant of the German World War II Ju 88 multirole twin engined bombers.
The bomber had two 1,340 hp to 1,400 hp Junkers Jumo 211J or 211F liquid-cooled inverted-V engines. It had a wingspan extended to 20.08 meters (redesigned wingtips compared to earlier A-1 models) and was 14.36 meters long. It could reach a maximum speed of 470 km/h (290 mph) in clean configuration and had a crew of 4 personnel (pilot, observer/bomb aimer, flight engineer/gunner, ventral/rear gunner).
The armaments had an upgraded defensive array including MG 81Z double-machine guns and MG 131 heavy machine guns, plus a flexible internal and external bomb load capacity up to 3,000–3,600 kg.
The cockpit and other vital areas were reinforced with around 110 kg of armoured glass and plate metal.
The Ju 88A entered service in large numbers starting in early 1941 (following lessons learned from vulnerable early A-1 types during the Battle of Britain) and were mainly deployed extensively on the Eastern Front, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and the defence of the Reich.
It served primarily as a level and dive bomber, but the versatile airframe was also adapted for torpedo bombing, reconnaissance, and heavy fighter/night-fighter operations
