ED11187 - Eduard
The Curtiss Kittyhawk (P-40E Warhawk) served as a primary frontline fighter and ground attack aircraft in the Pacific Theatre, Southwest Pacific and China-Burma-India campaigns during World War II.
Although the Allison V-1710 engine fitted to the P-40E struggled in thin air above 15,000 feet due to its single-speed supercharger, most Pacific dogfights occurred at lower altitudes where the engine excelled in torque, diving speed, and level flight speed compared to the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero.
In addition, the Allison engine and heavy airframe were notoriously durable, able to absorb substantial battle damage—such as 20 mm shell hits to the radiator—and tolerate tropical humidity, sand, and field maintenance better than lighter adversaries.
The P-40E was upgraded with six .50-caliber M2 Browning machine guns in the wings, plus hardpoints for bombs or drop tanks.
Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) & RNZAF: Received their first P-40E (Kittyhawk) squadrons starting in early 1942, playing a critical role in the defence of Northern Australia, New Guinea, and the South-West Pacific
