The Mitsubishi Lancer is a small sports sedan that was launched in 1967 with the intention of competing in the world rally championship. The name Lancer means 'Cavalry' and when the first generation of Lancers appeared in the rally scene in 1973, the car won the Australian Southern Cross Rally and in the following year won the Safari Rally a round of the World Rally Championship.
When the world oil crisis hit, most manufacturers reduced their racing team budgets and by 1977 had stopped their involvement in factory support of the rally team.
Two years later and Mitsubishi unveiled their second generation turbo charged Lancer the Lancer EX. This was the beginning of Mitsubishi's successes on the World Rally and International Rallying stages.
