In December 1787, HMS Bounty left England bound for Haiti to transport bread trees to the Caribbean. A great storm forced them to change course, arriving in Haiti after months of delays. These delays forced them to remain on the island for several months extra until it was possible to collect the shoots from the bread tree. The crew became habituated to the customs of the natives and established relations with the beautiful women of Haiti, almost forgetting that they were English sailors.
After many difficulties on the part of Bligh to reimpose discipline, the Bounty undertook the next leg on 4th of April 1789, with the subsequent mutiny occurring 24 days later. Bligh sailed more than 3,500 nautical miles for 47 days to the port of Dutch colony Coupang, losing only one of his men on the voyage.
