The Zlin Z-37 Čmelák (Bumblebee in Czech), also known as LET Z-37 Čmelák is an agricultural aircraft manufactured in Czechoslavakia and powered by a Soviet-built Ivchenko reciprocating engine. The aircraft is used mainly as a cropduster.
Agricultural use of aircraft became common practice after WW II as many suitable aircraft have been available for the aerial spreading of fertilisers, seeds or pesticides was found quite effective.
Manufacturers of aircraft in Eastern Europe were requested to start building agricultural specials and the Cmelak was developed in Czechoslovakia in 1960. The aircraft had to take off and land in very short unpaved areas and to have good handling when flying at low altitudes. The design had to be tough. resistant to rough handling and wear due to high numbers of takeoffs and landings.
From 1971, the Z-37A was produced, with a strengthened construction. It was produced until 1975, and then in 1983-1984. A total of 677 were produced, including 27 two-seater Z-37A-2s for crew training.
