ACA-12355 Academy Models
The Grumman F4F Wildcat is an American carrier based fighter aircraft that entered service in 1940 with the United States Navy.
With a top speed of 318 mph (512 km/h), the Wildcat was outperformed by the faster [331 mph (533 km/h)], more manoeuvrable, and longer-ranged Mitsubishi A6M Zero. The Wildcat has a claimed air combat kill-to-loss ratio of 5.9:1 in 1942 and 6.9:1 for the war.
During WWII the US Navy carrier based aircraft was mainly active in the Pacific theatre. Its folding-wing design allowed for significantly more Wildcats to be parked aboard fleet carriers. Early in the war these carrier-based aircraft became the backbone of the US Navy.
They were instrumental in the battle of Midway and the Coral Sea though they were not as fast or as manoeuvrable as the longer-range Zeros.
