It sports two hind limbs and two front limbs, the latter of which are modified into large wings, consisting of a membrane stretched over bone phalanges. A long tail extends from the posterior end of the spine, at the tip of which sits a thick bulb armed with a long spike. Rathalos belong to the same species as  Rathian and are all males. They can be distinguished by their red and black shell, blue eyes, as well as a complete lack of the female's characteristic toxic barbs. The males also have a shorter chin spike, which is solid and thicker than in the females. During the breeding season, this spike grows notably.\u003csup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-MHWOCW-283_8-0\"\u003e\u003c\/sup\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe signature red shell of the Rathalos is actually unique in many ways. Instead of being a fused armour shell with a handful of gaps to account for joints, a Rathalos' shell consists of large armour plates that sit on top of a flexible hide, which itself is covered in small scales. The shells are not fused together and thus do not impede the monster's range of movement. While this reduces the defensive capabilities of the shell somewhat, this structure grants the Rathalos unparalleled flexibility and articulation among Flying Wyvern, especially around the upper torso and shoulders.
