Sultan Arab Dhow Wooden Ship Model. Scale 1:85
ART-22165 - Artesania Latina
This wooden ship model depicts in 1:85 scale, a Sultan Arab Dhow Sailing Ship. These traditional Arabian dhow sailed from the coasts of the Arabian Peninsula, India and East Africa. This ship was the primary instrument in the commerce and in the propagation of the Islamic faith. Also, the dhow was mainly used as cargo ship, for grain, fish, slaves or minerals.
The exact origin of the dhow is unknown, although its appearance seems to be linked to Islam. Revolutionary in naval history for its triangular sails the design is practically unchanged since its initial designs and it is believed that the dhow was the germ for the construction of Venetian galleys and caravels, which favoured the creation of larger ships with mixed sails. The dhows are still sailing along the shores of the Indian Ocean.
The modelling kit of the Sultan dhow contains everything necessary for the model to be a faithful reflection of the original ship, thanks mainly to its design by false keel and frames.
The replica contains high precision laser cut boards featuring wood, brass and foundry parts with birch veneer featured.
