Pfalz D.IIIa, 1:48 Scale
08414 - Eduard
Weekend edition kit of German WWI fighter plane Pfalz D.IIIa in 1/48 scale.
The new Pfalz D.III was powered by the Mercedes in-line 6 cylinder 160hp motor. The fuselage was made from a plywood monocoque that was manufactured in two halves of long plywood strips placed diagonally in two layers over moulds. After the halves were hardened they were joined to the internal framework and then covered by a doped fabric.
This technology was called Wickelrumpf and was patented by Reinhold Richter. This method allowed designers to create a streamlined and very stiff fuselage, however the downside was the need for precise and time consuming manufacturing. There also was tendency for bending and twisting of the timbers despite being externally coated by an aluminium powdered paint.
